Where I searched for myself and where I'll find myself.

"Be proud of where you come from. It's a big part of what makes you who you are."
Where I come from
I was raised in a middle income family. My dad worked hard to give my sister and I the things we needed. Sometimes it cost him his emotional wellness. Sometimes it cost him a couple hours of lost sleep. One things for sure, he never came home with clean hands.
My mom worked as an insurance agent in town and served on many town boards. Man, does she have an imagination like none other. Raising two girls could not have been easy, but they did it. We lived on a budget and my mom followed it to every last penny. She wore Walmart clothes so we could wear name brand.
During my school years I made many friends, and probably a few enemies too. I had a class of 30 classmates and sometimes less. With numbers like that we had no choice but to be active in groups, clubs, and sports. I knew most birthdays, middle names, and addresses because thats just how it is in a small town. Often times your best friend is also a distant family member. In elementary school you had nicknames for everyone, as did they for you. We did not have several classrooms for each grade and hardly had a special education program for those in need. Don't even think about wearing those ripped jeans you just bought from Hollister...
In middle school my dad drug me to church and forced me to work on my homework. They tried to shaped me into someone they had no control over.
Once I got to high school, a few friend groups broke up and we started searching for who we were as people. Some people chose to do sports while others chose to cut their efforts and lost the motivation to do anything their family thought they would. Some chose to start their love life while others chose to spend their extra time hanging out with their friends.
Some people lost sight of their goals by drinking and partying, while some opted for things more favorable. The majority of us spent most of our day in town at school and extra curriculars then came home for chores. One thing stood true, we all searched for ourselves.
Where I went
I went through a couple years of college then moved off to the biggest city in South Dakota. I got a job and a social life. We spend our days working and our weekends downtown. At this point in my life I own the things I have and I spend my money on things I want... because I can. I spend some weekends out of town to go clubbing in my heals and not quite my "best dress." I do all the things I shouldn't and step on a few toes... because I can. I'm still finding myself.
Where my heart will always be
My heart will always be in those church pews and gravel roads we drove. My heart will forever hold a piece of those country roads, though I grew to love those city lights. Nothing will ever compare to those stars you see on a clear night in the middle of nowhere.
Home is where my heart will always be, and for that I am thankful.
To be honest I still don't know where I'm going.
